Question-of-the-Week: Food Savings

Just for fun (and because sometimes I'm really do need creative and tried-and-true suggestions) I'll be posting a QUESTION-OF-THE-WEEK on Monday. Sometimes about homeschooling, sometimes about parenting, always random and maybe a little unpredictable, but mostly for amusement and sharing. So, just comment your answers below and feel free to comment on comments!  But remember, it's just for fun so keep it friendly. (You guys already knew that though, right?)

Question-of-the-Week
How do you save on food costing? Tips and tricks?

  1. I'm not sure that I do save much on food costs. However, the garden works to help eliminate costs. I also purchase a lot of my dried foods from Amazon.com because it's cheaper than the local store. I grind my own wheat, which isn't necessarily cheaper, but healthier. I think when a life of healthy food is chosen you have to decide whether or not the extra cost is worth it. I buy some organic produce and other I don't. It's usually the dirty dozen produce that I buy organic. The cost isn't that much more.

    1. I forgot to mention. I don't buy prepared foods, convenience foods, cereal, chips, soda, juices, etc.. If I do, it's very rare.

    2. We're hoping to have some extras from the garden this year for freezing and canning, especially pumpkin. (We love pumpkin breads, muffins and pies.) It can save on veggie costs AND it's exercise and relaxation (sometimes).

I also buy little prepared foods, but we do like our cereal. LOL It's more of a dessert for us though.

  2. Shopping locally actually saves me money. The prices are a tad higher, but there is much less impulse shopping. I have seen my grocery bill decrease dramatically by shopping at our 'mom and pop' grocery store and Amish bulk foods store. I save gas money by not driving out of town and it keeps me out of Walmart which makes me always spend more than I intended!!

    1. Definitely! For me, shopping at Walmart is kinda a catch 20-20. It's a one-stop shop, but I tend to overspend by getting extras not on the list. We only have a few Mom and Pop stores, but one we do go too a bit. And there's a farm stand too, but it's 30-35 minutes away...and there's nothing that way to combine (such as the trash or additional shopping).

  3. I cook nearly all of our own meals and bring lunch to work each day. We very rarely go out to eat, so that saves us a ton of money on food costs. And we don't eat meat, so that also helps keep cost down. We eat a lot of beans, sweet potatoes, and squash, and can find those pretty cheap at the grocery store. I try to buy things in bulk when I can, too, to keep costs down. And we also have a big garden that we start from seed :)
